1st Friends meet-up

Refugee Week Greece Friends

This is a group of people who have lived displacement experiences, but also people who are artists and creatives, across Greece ensuring that we remain true to our original vision and to our communities.

At our meet-ups we have the opportunity to share our artistic and creative vision, on the programming of our events,  making sure the events are accessible to all communities, and making sure we don’t forget anything or anyone behind!

This group of artists can bring a friendly and critical perspective to how our festival is produced, whilst adding their touch to our program. The aim is to keep an open mind and all opinions are welcomed and shared!

The team comprises of:

Rouddy Kimpioka, Musician from Congo (DRC) based in Lesvos, Founder of the music band Rad Music International

Elena Zervopoulou, Film director and founder of Diversity United based in Athens

Mohamed Tayeb, Photographer from Syria based in Athens

2nd Friends meet-up

Let’s meet our Refugee Week Greece Friends!

  • Nima Javan

Nima is an Iranian artist based in London. He is the illustrator of the Healing logo for Refugee Week 2022.

The main theme in my work is the happiness that is created in the world of various characters and creatures. A world that is truly a way of life and a way to live. Colours that are happy and fancy can give me a positive and energetic feeling. I’m always looking for new ways to express and develop my natural creativity. Peace is one of the concepts that I strive for in this way of life. Creating solidarity and friendship among all beings created by my mental creativity is difficult work, but it’s on its way to becoming a reality and evolving.

“Healing, to me is the ability and power to persevere in all of life’s difficult situations. Everyone can achieve this ability by studying and getting to know themselves in order to improve their well-being. Hard issues and injuries can be replaced with new activities that have new definitions and a more beautiful perspective”

  • Mohamed Tayeb

I am Mohamed Tayeb I came from Syria, I like living in Greece also enjoying with all activities with amazing local people and refugees, I used to work in theater and photography.

“Healing is “inner peace and nature can make the impossible possible”

  • Rouddy Kimpioka

Rouddy is a musician from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is based in Lesvos as part of RAD music International.

“Healing is the recovery moment when you are in a hard situation in your life, and you have to know where your healing is, if you identify it, it can help to change your situation. Healing is important to all human beings. Write Music and Singing the hope songs  is my healing at last moment”

  • Elena Zervopoulou

Elena Zervopoulou is a French-Greek ethno-psychologist, film director and producer. She is also the founder of Diversity United and One Vibe Films.

With a background in ethno-psychology, I have worked supporting immigrant families (Paris), refugee unaccompanied minors (S.Italy) and street children as a UNESCO consultant (Madagascar). As a founder of One Vibe Films, I have written, directed and produced creative documentaries and VR films for international broadcasters and for NGOs, mainly shot in remote areas of Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa. I founded Diversity United in Athens to empower vulnerable communities of refugees through participatory artistic processes for a better, more inclusive world.

“From the I to the WE, healing comes with the awareness of our interconnection to ALL. With my films and participatory artistic projects, I seek to restore the dignity of forgotten people and to break down any stereotypes by bridging worlds and promoting intercultural dialogue. I envision more solidarity, social and environmental change, and to accelerate the impact, I design cross-media and digital solutions”

  • Maria Papaioannou

Maria has been working as Head of Arts and Arts Consultant for the British Council since 2012. She is implementing international art projects and is leading an EU museum programme for the British Council – Museums Revisited. After spending 7 years in the UK, she returned to Greece in 2010 and worked as curator and culture Consultant for CultureOut. She has collaborated with artists on various cultural projects and contemporary art exhibitions. She has a keen interest in photography and collage and has co- founded LIE gallery, an online gallery dedicated to the art of collage.

“Healing is about embracing and accepting the broken or damaged bits of ourselves”

  • Denia Nicolas FreeMovemnet, Skateboard instructor

I grew up in London with Greek-Cypriot parents, a family with a refugee and migration background. A graduate of Exeter University and SOAS, I lived in Mytilini, Lesvos, at the height of the influx in 2015 and, for the past 7 years, in Athens. In these years I have worked with different groups, projects and organisations in the refugee field. Currently, I am working with Free Movement Skateboarding, an incredible project that works to bring children, young people and neighbourhoods together, to improve and support their wellbeing, empowerment and social cohesion. We work to build community through skateboarding, on and off the board.

‘Healing happens when you finally feel a sense of belonging and acceptance’
